Abstract

The term “Cheiloscopy” is derived from Greek term where in “Cheilo” means lip and “Scopy” means to examine. The phenomenal systems of furrows on lips were first noted by anthropologist R. Fischer in 1902. However, the uniqueness of the lip furrows were first mentioned by two Japanese scientists Y Tsuchihashi and T. Suzuki after examining lips of 1364 persons in 1968-1971. Cheiloscopic examination has emerged as a promising tool in forensic dentistry. This chapter reviews the various aspects of Cheiloscopy such as its history, classification, lip print recording, demerits of lip prints and application of cheiloscopy in forensics etc.

Human identification is a critical requirement in forensic science. It is required for death certification and for personal, legal, social, and humanitarian reasons. The primary means of identification in forensic medicine include fingerprints, DNA comparison, and dental traits. Many times, one or all of these methods may not be totally effective or conclusive in establishing identity, especially in cases of burns, aircraft accidents etc.

Extensive knowledge still is lacking in the subject and have to be high lightened, so that important evidences are not lost, and the identification of a victim and /or a criminal does not remain unnoticed.
